New Years 2006 at The Guvernment
I spent New Years Eve in Toronto with Dan, Adam, Jeff, and John. It was John’s idea originally – he’s been in club withdrawal since coming back from England a few weeks ago. I spent Saturday walking around the city – Kensington Market, Queen St, a few cafes and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Most of the pictures I took are from this adventure. I’ve also uploaded two pics that Jeff took at the club.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Downtown which cost us $150USD per night per room. It was a nice place (newly-renovated?) and was close to a bunch of clubs. We had to pay $15CAD per day to park underground in the Hotel’s lot.
On New Years Eve, we payed $60CAD at the door for tickets to The Guvernment. We got there at about 9:30pm, waited twenty minutes in line, and stepped into a world of house music that lasted until 9:00am the next morning. Capacity at the Guvernment and its eight rooms is 3,500 – I wouldn’t be surprised if they hit 3,000 that night. I’ve only been there for concerts so I was surprised to see that they have 8 different rooms and at least 5 bars. There was even roof access from which you can see the waterfront. Considering the length of time we were there and the quality of the music, it was definitely worth the price.
Resident DJ Mark Oliver was spinning in the main room. Be sure to visit the “webcast” section of his site to grab the ~2hr MP3 from Nov ’05 – it’s pretty damn good. At around 4am they began closing the smaller rooms. By 7am, Oliver was the only DJ left standing. He spun for the crowd of three or four hundred til they kicked us out.
Sydney Blu was cold rocking it until around 5am in the room next door. She appears in this video from another night at the Guvernment at ~22:00. Thanks to XexRadio for producing that video. I liked her style the best (progressive/tribal?) and spent most of the night there.
Here are two galleries of pictures taken by other people. Thanks to Rick and Steph for hosting these on their “all-things-guvernment” site, www.luvtheguv.com.
Anybody interested in going next year?
